AHMADINEJAD’S NUCLEAR ENERGY POLICY CRITICIZED IN IRAN

The President Ahmadinejad’s foreign policy and the attitude of about nuclear energy are criticized not only by the reformists and also by the conservative wing. While the hope among the political circles and public for that the Iran-US tension can be solved through diplomatic ways has lost, it is stated that Iran has set off an irreversible process. The received information indicates that the US administration has started talks about the sanctions with Britain, France, Germany, China and the Russian Federation. It is stated that the issues, such as “the prevention of the activities of some Iranian firms, warning the countries that cooperates with Iran in defense industry field, conditioning Iran-related commercial activities according to the potential resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the restriction and the control of the contacts of the Iranian officials who involve in the activities related to the nuclear program” are being discussed.

According to the information received from the official news agency, IRNA, it is expressed that the Secretary General of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani stated, Iran is ready to study an official request to come from Washington with a positive outlook, but he refused the suspension, as a precondition, of the uranium enrichment program. While the USA wants the Iranian enrichment program to be suspended before any negotiations, Iran insistently emphasize that it will not give up this program. Subsequent statements come from both the conservative and the reformist wings. While the Secretary of the Islamic Revolution Mujahedin, Mohsen Armin, criticizes Ahmadinejad’s initiatives to improve the relations with the anti-American countries, especially the Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Islamic Revolution Mujahedin emphasizes that the regime’s policy of the nuclear energy program will harm the country and drew the attention to the fact that acting without considering the international conditions and against the world public opinion will only wear down the Iranian people.

Meanwhile, the reformists who constitute the minority group in the Iranian Majlese Shuraye aslami stated that they were ready for the negotiations on the nuclear energy program with the members of the US Congress. The spokesman of the minority group, Nureddin Pirmuezen, an Ardabil Deputy, stated that Iran had come to the edge of a crisis in the international relations and establishing a dialogue at the level of parliamentarians between the USA and Iran would contribute to the crises to be overcome. On the other hand, it is expressed that former Presidents, Hashimi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatemi, made statements suggesting, establishing a global alliance against Iran should be prevented, and having common sense in the foreign policy is needed.

On the other hand, disputes on the nuclear policy have led to the split within the conservatives in the Iranian Majlese Shuraye aslami.  A group who are critical of Ahmadinejad separated from the conservatives and came together under Creative Conservatives on January 22, 2007. A member of the mentioned group and also the Chairman of the Cultural Commission in the Iranian Majlese Shuraye aslami , Amad Afrugh, stated, By separating from the conservatives, we managed to draw the attention of the regime and the public opinion.

It is voiced in the political circles that the splits in the conservative wing carry a serious message against the Ahmadinejad rule, and that there is not a leader to prevent these splits. Thus, the received information indicates the search for a new leader within the conservative wing. Meanwhile, the group most positively affected with the developments is definitely the reformists. The Secretary General of the reformist Cephe-ye Mosharekate Irane Aslami (Iranian Islamic Participation Committee), Mohsen Mirdamadi, said in his statement in February 2007, the Presidents Ahmadinejad’s domestic and foreign policy contributes the unification of the reformists. Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad is expected to give up his uncompromising attitude regarding the nuclear program and display a moderate approach due to Hashimi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatemi’s rhetoric supporting Ahmadinejad, and the serious problems that potential sanctions against Iran may raise.
