A SHAME IN THE IRANIAN POLITICS:
THE ARREST OF BORUJERDI…
Ayatollah
Mohammad Kazem Borujerdi who advocates secularity as opposed
to political Islam in Iran and who has a broad base among
the people of Tehran in particular was arrested by the
Iranian Security Forces at about 05:00 on 08 October 2006.
The
clergyman stated that a return should be made to the
traditional Islam due to the fact that Islam has been dealt
with a heavy blow recently, his view received with reaction
by the senior administrators including the Iranian President
in particular. As a result, a decision was made for his
arrest on the grounds that “he attempted to divide the
country by trying to provoke the people”.
Borujerdi’s
followers numbering almost 2.000 after hearing the decision
took measures around him and his house for protection and
had armed clashes with the security forces during the raid
carried out against his house on 6 October. Almost 200
people, 30 of which were severely injured, were wounded in
the armed clash occurred between his supporters and the
security forces on 5 October and the following two days.
Upon the incidents, the Iranian Government detained
Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Kazem about whom it has been
feeling uneasy for a long time and yet has been unable to
intervene due to its “Religious Identity” together with his
family and Kianoush Senjeri, the shura (council) member of a
student front called Mottehed.
Borujerdi
who has caused the anger of the administration recently said
in the speeches that “the Iranian people are fed up with the
‘religious politics’ and wish to return to the traditional
Islam in the former times and that in order to voice the
uneasiness more openly he wrote a letter to the various non
governmental organizations and the UN Secretary General and
in his letter he stated that ‘the society needs such an
opening-up, the Iranian Government does not approach the
issue from a legal perspective’ and requested the required
measures to be taken.”
Ayatollah
Seyed Mohammad Kazem Borujerdi about whom it is rumored by
the Iranian Intelligence that “he is supported by the USA
and he often has meetings with the US officials” has been
put under close surveillance in recent times, and his family
is threatened by the intelligence officers from time to
time. Moreover, the views of Borujerdi, the articles of who
are banned from distribution and even reading are
distributed under cover among the people and they are
becoming more popular in the recent times.
It is
commented behind the political scenes that “Iran is a
country that is committed to the Islamic traditions, the
ayatollahs that are respected highly by the people are
considered as the “representatives of the religion”, for the
first time in Iranian history an ayatollah has been arrested
by being hit and insulted, and the people will never forget
this.” Meanwhile, although it is raised often that the
Iranian people who deem “the incident” as “a disrespect to
Islam” may show a significant reaction against Ahmadinejad
Government within the coming period, it is considered that
he may be released within a week due to the fact that it may
cause further public reaction.
