THE BASIJ FORCES ENGAGED IN CONTROL
ACTIVITIES
In Iran, members of the Basij Organization
of the Revolutionary Guards Corp (RGC), along with the
Nirouye Antazami forces, started patrolling to ensure public
security at certain hours at the city centers. To this end,
throughout the country, primarily in the big cities “Mobile
Security Teams” were established to ensure security at the
quarters and streets during night hours. One of the Basij
Commanders Hossein Tayyab, in the declaration he made in
April, mentioned that those groups would be on duty during
summer season.
In the meanwhile, it is mentioned that
during the controls the Basij forces behaved in a severe and
unlawful manner and had arguments with the citizens.
Countrywide, incidents causing severe injuries and deaths
are reported. Recently on May 25 Mohammed Tafighian a Basij
official lost his life in a quarrel between the Basij team
carrying out controls and the citizens at the Tehran city
center.
The citizens reacted against the fact that
the Iranian Administration used for security controls the
Basij elements, which it granted police authorities on the
pretext of external threats. The reformist circles reacting
against the practice accused the government for the
incidents and mentioned “the real aim of the Mobile Basij
Teams is to work as a guard for moralities.”
