WE SHOULD SAY STOP TO THE HUMILIATION OF THE IRANIAN WOMEN

The bill which is to be submitted to the General Assembly by the Law and Rules Commission of the Iranian parliament represents a great disrespect and injustice to us, Iranian women. This proposal of amendment suggests “the removal of the consent of the first wife when a married man makes a second marriage without divorcing”.

This bill is meant to “damage the holy institution of family” by encouraging the men. Thus, a dated way of living such as polygamy will be legitimated.  This bill which is named as the “Law to protect the family” (Hamayet Khanevade) can only be named as the “Law to protect the men” or “Law to damage the familial unity”. Everybody knows that many irregularities are made in the general elections and that the majority in the parliament also takes part in this game. So, such a decision of this parliament has not surprised us.

The women should be consulted when putting into practice the laws prepared in accordance with the Shari. In our country, however, the women are not even the citizens of second class. Speaking is a crime for the women and many women in Iran face the risk of death due to the dated and illogical rules.

The pressures and violence against women have increased in the rule of Ahmadinajad. The women are manhandled and humiliated in the streets by the policemen because of their style of wearing. A father killed his daughter of 14 years old by throwing stones at her with the suspect that she has lost her virginity. It is forbidden that the women rest and even benefit from the sunlight in the parks.

A country consists of its male and female citizens. The sulks of the citizens against a state mean the annihilation of this state and for this, there is no need for a different enemy.

As the Iranian women, we call on all the law-makers to think again. We ask the authorities who ignoring the voice of the women and saying that “the women who do not respect the rules deserve to be killed”: “Who gave birth to you? Who brought you up?” If this proposal of amendment comes about, everybody should know that we will held comprehensive demonstrations and we will claim our rights.

On behalf of a group of Iranian women
