BBC: “NO
SUPPORT FOR MILITARY INTERVENTION”
A public
survey conducted for the BBC World Service indicates that
many countries believe that Iranian nuclear program aims at
developing nuclear weapons. 60% of those who joined the
public survey carried out in 25 countries by the Globescan
survey company and the American Maryland University thinks
that Tehran is in pursue of nuclear weapons. However, only
the 11% is pro-military option in order to stop Iran. 39 %
of the survey participants favor a solution through
diplomatic means. The survey reveals striking results
regarding what is the thought of the public opinion
regarding the Iranian nuclear activities.
Majority of
the people in the 25 countries where the survey was
conducted do not find the Iranian thesis, which says that
the nuclear program is completely intended for electricity
power, convincing. According to averagely 60% of the survey
participants, Iran has been trying to produce nuclear
weapons. Those who are of this opinion are in majority in 19
countries. For example, 60 percent of Iraqis, 54% of
Egyptians and 47 % of Indonesians think that Iran is in
pursue of nuclear bomb. Such a development is said in all
countries to be worrisome. It is stated in 9 countries that
Iran’s developing nuclear weapons would be “too much
worrisome”. Israel, Britain, Australia, Canada, Brazil,
Germany and Poland too are among those countries. But
according to the survey, this concern does not accompany the
request for the introduction of harsh measures against Iran.
Only a small part wants a military option to be resorted to
unless Iran quits its nuclear program. The rate of those who
are of this view is 11%. The rate of those who say that
economic sanctions have to be imposed against Iran is not so
high. Intensified diplomatic efforts are favored most.
Majority of the survey participants in the three Muslim
countries, Turkey; Egypt and Iraq, are of the opinion that
Iran is trying to obtain nuclear weapons.
Steven Kull
from the Maryland University state that all three countries
observe the Iranian nuclear activities with concern. Steven
Kull says, “Egypt and Turkey do not want sanctions to be
resorted to”. According to Steven Kull, there are several
tendencies in Iraq. While the 34% of those whose opinions
were asked, want the implementation of military options
against Tehran, 29% favors economic sanctions. (BBC-
