THE PRIDE OF SOUTHERN
AZEBAIJANIS, SHAHNAZ GHOLAMI
A human rights champion, the
voice of oppressed Southern Azerbaijanis, the friend of
oppressed Iranian women, our pride and a journalist, Shahnaz
Gholami was arrested a short while ago.
Sister, Gholami has been kept in
prison by the Iranian murderer security forces since
November 9, 2008 . She has been terribly beaten by the
prison officials during this period. Adopting her case
irreversibly, Shahnaz went on hunger strike in December 19
to protest these heavy conditions. Consequently, she has
lost his conscious.
The regime is not unfamiliar with
such cases. Iranian human rights report is full of many such
incidents… Zahra Qazemi, Dr. Zahra Baniyaghoub, Hale
Esfandiyary and hundreds of our other fighter women should
not be forgotten!... All these figures were subjected to
torture in prisons and died of it or committed suicide.
Besides, Gholami is the second website administrator
arrested in the last two months. This demonstrates that
anybody who tries to defend his rights or says “I am Turk”
cannot avoid being arrested in a country where there is no
freedom of expression.
Sister Shahnaz also served
sentence in prison for five years between 1990 - 1995. But
this punishment did not daunt her and she continued to
defend the rights of Azerbaijanis and be the voice of
oppressed Iranian women. This decisiveness of Shahnaz
appalled the regime. Eventually, Gholami was detained when
she was about to travel to Sweden to attend a conference on
“The Status of Women in Iran ”.
We, the Southern Azerbaijanis and
Iranian women, owe much to Shahnaz Gholami. Shahnaz Gholami
and our comrades of the case will continue to be supported.
