US
TERRORISM REPORT IS TARGETING IRAN
In the
English broadcast of Al Jazira Television on 1 May 2008, the
US Department of State’s country report on terrorism
annually published states that Iran is accused of providing
aid to Palestine’s Hamas Group, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and
militants in Iraq and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. The
report declares that some elements of Islamic Revolution
Guards directly participated in the planning of terrorist
acts in the Middle East and they supported those acts. The
Pentagon officials point out that the Iraqi leaders have
been presented with evidence by the USA that refute their
rhetoric that Tehran has rejected producing weapons and
conducting nuclear activities.
The
publication of the report by the USA at a time when the
Defense Secretary Robert Gates declared that second frigate
was sent to the Gulf to intimidate Iran and when Iran
stopped selling oil in return for dollar is defined as
interesting. The report published by the US Department of
State lists Syria, North Korea, Cuba and Sudan as countries
promoting the terrorist groups.
The report
also indicates that the number of attacks in Afghanistan
increased by 16% in 2006-2007 and the reason for this as the
growth of Al Qaida’s movement in Pakistan. The US notes that
Al Qaida started carrying out activities in the tribal areas
of Pakistan within the last year.
Meanwhile;
the report indicates that the attacks in Iraq have decreased
in number in 2007 compared to 2006. However, although the
number of attacks decreased, death toll increased by eight
percent. The US also points out that despite the great
struggle against Al Qaida it constitutes the greatest threat
against the US national security. The report declared that
Al Qaida increased its capabilities before September 11
attacks considerably. In particular new militants were
replaced the senior militants killed in the activities of
the organization in the tribal area of Pakistan.” The report
indicated the cease fire agreement made between Pakistan
Government and tribal leaders as the reason for the
organization’s increased activity in Pakistan. Even though
the cease fire agreement came to an end, the efforts by the
Pakistan Government to reach an agreement again have caused
the increased US worries that the struggle against Al Qaida
will fail. The report claimed that the declaration of the
cease fire resulted in instability in the region and
declared that “the cease fire enabled Al Qaida to enter into
a period when it will train its militants, renew its cadre
of leaders and produce plots for acts” (Al-Jazira TV-
01/05/2008).
