IRAN IS TAKING MEASURES AGAINST PROPAGANDA
In Iran, “Cyber Internet Unit”
was established in January 2011 within
the body of Nirouye Entezami
so as to combat cyber crimes. The
objective of the unit was
reported to identify, monitor and hack the
opposition web sites
broadcasting from inside and outside Iran and
conduct counter propaganda
activities.” Also the unit was reported to
be primarily aimed at South
Azerbaijani formations and proponents of
Green Movement. It is noted
that a hacker unit has been created within
Basij Forces and within this
scope 1.500 technicians have been
employed.
Making a statement with
regard to the subject, senior security
official Ahmad Reza Raadan
said that “traditional crimes have been
replaced with new types of
crime with the advance in science;
individuals, groups and
countries are conducting their activities for
organization and
psychological attrition via internet; foreign
countries in particular the
USA is using the internet for intelligence
purposes.” Raadan stated that
security organizations increasingly need
new units related with cyber
crimes with each passing day.
In fact the censorship of
internet has been going on for a very long
time in the country. Many
internet sites have been banned from
broadcasting on charge of
“broadcasting against the government.” All
the internet sites linked
with outside of Iran are under control. The
Administration is currently
working on “the National Internet Network
Project” aimed at preventing
the international access. The project is
directed towards the
formation of a broad intranet network throughout
the country, getting
connected to the internet through this network
and accessing the sites which
the government allows only. If the
project is put into action,
the freedom of expression and obtaining
information of the public
will be completely taken away from its hand.
